Outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease

Last week an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) was detected in Brandenburg, Germany. A disease of which we hoped to have it under control since decades (the last case in Germany was in 1988). This new and unexpected outbreak highlights that we should always be prepared for disease introduction and biosecurity levels should remain high at all times. Although not dangerous for humans, FMD is highly contagious for ruminants and pigs, with huge impacts on their performance and the future of the herd.
